Marathon Lite® is a soil-less, hydroponically grown tall fescue sod. Because it is grown on a barrier instead of in the ground, it weighs a little over half as much as traditional field-grown sod. Each piece is also larger, about 2 feet by 4 feet, which means faster coverage with fewer seams.
It is produced by spreading seed with composted green waste and bark chips in a thin layer over a plastic sheet. As the grass grows, the roots are guided to spread sideways along the barrier, creating a strong, woven root mat. When it is ready to harvest, the sod lifts cleanly from the sheet with the roots fully intact, so there is no shock from being torn out of soil.
